Why does my image save as WebP?

WebP is a modern format from Google that makes images about a third smaller than JPG, so many websites, shops and social networks now serve their pictures as WebP. When you right-click and choose Save image as, you get that WebP file, even if the page looked like it was showing a normal photo.

Current browsers open WebP without any trouble, but plenty of other software does not. Older versions of Photoshop and Microsoft Office, some photo printers, online forms that only accept “JPG or PNG”, and many messaging apps on older phones will refuse it. Converting to JPG fixes all of those in one step.

JPG or PNG?

Choose JPG for photographs. It is accepted everywhere and keeps the file small. Choose WebP to PNG for logos, icons, stickers and screenshots with text, because PNG keeps sharp edges and transparency.

WebP images with a transparent background get a white background as JPG. Animated WebPs are not supported, since JPG is a still-image format.

The JPG may be slightly larger than the WebP. That is normal, because WebP compresses better. If size matters more than the last bit of detail, lower the quality slider to about 80, or run the result through compress JPEG.

No upload, no account

The WebP decoder and the JPG encoder are compiled to WebAssembly and run inside your browser. Your images never leave your device, so you can convert private pictures safely. You can confirm this in the Network tab of your browser’s developer tools, and the tool keeps working offline once loaded.

Frequently asked questions

Why do images from websites save as WebP?

Many sites serve WebP because it is smaller than JPG and loads faster. When you right-click and save, you get the WebP file, which some older programs, upload forms and photo printers still refuse.

Can I convert an animated WebP?

No. JPG is a still-image format, so this tool is for ordinary still WebP images, which make up almost all WebP files saved from websites.

Will converting make the file bigger?

Usually a little, because WebP compresses better than JPG. Lower the quality slider to around 80 if the size matters more than the last bit of detail.

Are my files uploaded anywhere? How can I check?

No. The WebP to JPG converter runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device. You can verify it: open your browser's DevTools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac), switch to the Network tab, tick "Preserve log", clear the list and process a file. You will only see requests for this site's own static files, never one that carries your data. You can also turn on "Offline" in the Network tab (or disconnect from the internet) once the page has loaded, and the tool keeps working.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After your first visit a service worker saves the tool to your device, so it opens and works without a connection. Only advertising needs the internet; the processing never does.
