Instagram image sizes
| Format | Size in pixels | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Portrait post | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 |
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 |
| Story or Reel cover | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |
Instagram displays images 1080 pixels wide. Uploading anything larger does not add detail; the app just scales it down with its own, more aggressive compression. Uploading at exactly 1080 pixels wide gives you control over how the picture is sized.
Why portrait is the best choice for posts
In the feed, a 4:5 portrait image takes up about 25 percent more of the screen than a square one, which makes people more likely to stop scrolling. Landscape photos are shown smallest of all. Unless your picture really needs to be square or wide, 1080 × 1350 is the size to use.
Choosing what gets cropped
Crop to fill keeps the centre of the photo and trims the edges to reach the exact ratio. That works for most pictures. If the subject is off to one side, or you want a tighter frame, use the crop tool with a 4:5, 1:1 or 9:16 ratio first, then resize here.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best image size for Instagram?
Use 1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5 portrait) for feed posts, because it takes up the most screen space. Square posts are 1080 × 1080 and stories and Reels covers are 1080 × 1920.
Why does Instagram crop my photo?
Feed posts must be between 1.91:1 landscape and 4:5 portrait. Anything taller is cropped. Resizing to 1080 × 1350 with crop-to-fill gives you control over the result.
Can I control which part is kept?
Crop-to-fill keeps the centre. To pick a different area, use the crop tool with a 4:5 or 1:1 ratio first, then resize here.
Are my files uploaded anywhere? How can I check?
No. The image resizer runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device. You can verify it: open your browser's DevTools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac), switch to the Network tab, tick "Preserve log", clear the list and process a file. You will only see requests for this site's own static files, never one that carries your data. You can also turn on "Offline" in the Network tab (or disconnect from the internet) once the page has loaded, and the tool keeps working.
Does it work offline?
Yes. After your first visit a service worker saves the tool to your device, so it opens and works without a connection. Only advertising needs the internet; the processing never does.
